![]() | 28apr2011 - Ian Watson Mitchell... I just stumbled over your site whilst researching for an update to an old article. I'm afraid I go back much, much further in the history of what was known as "The Green Door" ...back to the early 1960s when it was still a kind of "open secret" in the London Civil Servant and Business scene. I recall the waiter - "George" who took such great care of us, always there, somewhere. I guess he would be around 120 now! I look back on those long gone days with much regret... even although here in the South of France I'm closer to the source of origin of many things tasted at "Gordons". Click here to read more.
| 03apr2011 - Natalie... My little story for you - I lived and worked in London for a while a few years ago. I had wanted to do so all my life however with three sons to bring up, for many years on my own, I had to wait until they had all grown up. During my fabulous time working in London, one of the many wonderful people I met, was a lovely guy, Patrick, no romance but he introduced me to his two close friends from his schooldays - they were already then in their late 40s and all 'long term single males'. They are lovely guys with the dryest sense of humour and they met up every Friday and had done for years. They invited me out virtually every single Friday I lived there and often I was able to join them - they became my 'Friday night boys'. They introduced me to so many wonderful London pubs and bars including yours (my favourite, truly). I often felt like I was on 'Challenge Anneka' as I tried to find them in some often obscure places, and sometimes I arrived as the bar was closing! I eventually returned home (up north) and later got re-married. During my time in London, I introduced others including visiting friends to your bar and these days when visiting London with husband, family or friends (one of my sons still lives down there) try to visit you when I can. | ||
![]() | 05jul2010 - Bonnie and Marty Hurwitz... Marty: We're Bonnie and Marty Hurwitz, US friends of Joan's and long-time disciples of Gordon's. We'll be in London again 7-12 June. We hope that Joan will be feeling well enough to come in and work her magic while we're there. Simon: She is moving to a lovely new assisted flat soon so won't be there after 18th May. She is still coming in to the bar but is coming down with dementia sadly. Marty: We were lucky in London on 13 June. Joan wasn't working, but came in for lunch. Your website had a photo of her wearing a NY Yankees hat. It's a tired old team. We brought her a Washington Nationals hat, photo attached. It's a young (and so far unsuccessful) team, but great sport to watch. I'd appreciate it if you'd print the photo for Joan. What a change you've made in Watergate Walk! It's just great. One question: Where did you hide the dust bins? Simon: Aha - the dustbins are no longer needed! We recycle all glass in the PWC building opposite and they kindly let us recycle all cardboard in their machine and other stuff goes into their crusher. Win win as they say!! Marty: Your arrangement with PWC has one small drawback. We miss the look af apprehension we got when we told our friends to "go down the steps and into the first entrance past the trash cans." Cheers, Marty
| 22jun2010 - American friends – The Verrets: Joan will never remember us, but my wife and I will always remember her. We were traveling through London on a beautiful July day when we stumbled upon Gordon’s; no rain in July that day. Anyhow, after stumbling down a flight of stairs we were greeted by a wonderfully youthful woman named Joan. And upon her greeting we heard her story and the story of Gordon’s. Since that day, my wife and I make Gordon’s a must stop every time we pass through London. The Ploughman’s lunch, with a tasty bottle of wine, and Joan’s tales make the trip beyond everything we had ever thought. We have not been back for a number of years, but we will be to Gordons’ this September. Looking forward to a tasty afternoon. | ||

| 20apr2009 - Here’s an image of me and Joan (October 2008) discussing my continued romantic interludes, as Gordons is always my first date venue (and I have had a few of them!!!). The pic is me explaining to Joan about my first dates and their success, when all of a sudden she then told my niece Lucy Odlin that me and Joan used to canoodle in the corner ...she has such a great way about her, what a great woman. | ||
